I usually force myself up at the alarm — no lingering in bed. Breakfast, washing up, watering the plants, all in a rush. But the food drains me, the screens drain me, and I’m never quite rested. Today, though, there’s a deadline looming over a proposal I haven’t even started. So I let myself have a nap after breakfast — a prelude to the focus I’ll need.
Summer heat hangs heavy, even without the sun. I crack the window wide — sixty centimeters of lake air, or at least a breath of it. The street hums with cars, and that hum carried me into a strange fantasy: a hotel room in Europe, during tourist season, overlooking a busy street.
In that dream, I was free. No one was watching — no judgment on my age, my life choices, my drive. I felt like a child again, wanting to do a dozen things at once, just moving, not worrying about results. There was someone beside me — a companion, in tune with me. And then a quiet doubt: “No house, no kids, no permanent partner — what about old age?” And a softer reply: “When there’s a need, there’ll be an answer.”
In that dream, I was light. Unburdened. Brave. Optimistic. Waking up, I realized how long it’s been since I’ve slept that deeply — it was like a full, inward breath. And maybe this was the first dream I’ve ever had that was so clearly about saying yes to myself. It felt good.
